2013 Grand Finals at Parliament House

On Saturday 21st September 2013, the Grand Finals of the 2013 Schools’ Competition were held in The House of Assembly Chamber of Parliament House. Each debate began with a welcome from the Chairman of the Board of Debating SA, Mr Tony Houey.

Year 8

The day began with the Year 8 division debate at 10:00am with the Year 8s debating the topic “That childhood is losing its magic.” Students engaged well with this topic and after a highly contested debate between Marryatville High School and Pulteney Grammar School the Marryatville team were the victors.

Year 9

The Year 9 debate followed at 11:00am with Glenunga International High School debating Unley High School on “That modern art has merit.” Unley High School were the winners.

Year 10

At 12:00pm the Year 10 debate between the affirmative Westminster School and Pulteney Grammar School as the negative began. The topic was “That Apple is really a lemon.”

The Westminster team emerged victorious.

Senior

The Senior division debate began at 2:00pm with St John’s Grammar School debating Pulteney Grammar School. The topic was “That foreign aid is a waste of money.”

St John’s Grammar School were the victors.

Open

The final debate of the day was the Open division debate at 3:30pm was a quodlibetical on the Syrian Civil War on the topic “That there is no justification for any country to interfere with the internal affairs of Syria.”

Both sides of Sacred Heart College Senior and Glenunga International High School had researched this topic extraordinarily well and the standard was excellent. Glenunga International High School was declared the winner.
