South Australians, what do you think about a ban on balloons?
Norwood, Payneham and St Peters Council in eastern Adelaide has asked the state government to consider a ban on balloons and plastic confetti to cut down on pollution.
It’s part of a larger push to ban single-use plastics that can pollute Adelaide’s waterways and take a long time to break down.
Mayor Robert Bria told ABC Radio Adelaide’s Nikolai Beilharz and Stacey Lee why he’s pushing for the ban.
“The community is becoming more environmentally conscious, and I think over time we are getting used to the phasing out of products.
I think if anything should be suggested to be banned it’s controversial, but what the Government’s discussion paper suggests is that there are alternatives to all these products and the Council took the view that there is an alternative to balloons that people can use to celebrate occasions.”
