For the average person the word “Stoic”, conjures up all sorts of misconceptions. Often Stoics are thought of as being emotionless and passive but nothing could be further from the truth.

They were dynamic and practical thinkers.

Who were the Stoics and what did they believe?

In this thought-provoking seminar designed for young students, we will discuss four Stoics, Zeno, Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius and Seneca the Younger.

We will also examine the four virtues of Stoicism: Courage, Temperance, Justice and Wisdom.

Stoic philosophy offers simple strategies that can be applied to life’s stumbling blocks in a rational, thoughtful way. This ancient remarkable philosophy is as relevant to modern life as it was when it was first practised over two thousand years ago.

It holds the key to teach modern children resilience, tolerance and the importance of a person’s character.

The seminar will consist of a PowerPoint presentation, group discussion and written exercises. This will be followed by a film: Paddington Bear. (an excellent example of a Stoic Bear!)

A gift to every student will include a Sterling Silver Dinarius of Marcus Aurealius who was Emperor of Rome 161-180 AD cast exclusively for Debating SA by The Adelaide Mint, as well as a journal.

Lunch will be provided for all participants.
