2008 Stirring the Possum 'Joey' Debate

The fourth annual Global Issues Tournament was held at Adelaide High School on Thursday 22nd November 2007. The theme of the tournament was conflict; the day's topic being "That the use of nuclear weapons should be abolished."

Debating SA was privileged to feature as guest speaker, Petra Ball, an IHL Officer from Australian Red Cross who gave a presentation on International Humanitarian Law.

2005 Global Issues Tournament

The third annual Global Issues Tournament was held at Adelaide High School on Thursday 24th November 2005. The topic was "That the Australian government should focus on Australian poverty."

Debating SA was privileged to feature as guest speaker Karen Grogan, Executive Director of SACOSS. Karen spoke about SACOSS's Anti-Poverty Campaign, Closer Than You Think and officially released five fact sheets on poverty. 2004 Global Issues Tournament

Event Date: 2 December 2004
Venue: Adelaide High School

On Thursday 2 December 2004, thirty-six students and their teachers took part in the 2004 Global Issues Tournament, which was proudly sponsored by Hays Personnel Services.

The purpose of the tournament was to give year eight and nine students the chance to participate in a mini debating tournament in which they developed their skills by debating a topic that has great relevance to young people of their age group around the world. This was done in the spirit of being aware of other points-of-view on an issue. The topic of the 2004 Global Issues Tournament was "That having a part-time job encroaches on study time."

At the end of the 2003 season we put out the call for 50 new adjudicators by 2004. With the help of UniBooks we put up posters, sent emails and made many phone calls to spread the word about our need for adjudicators.

As a special event a tournament was held to discern who the best individual speaker in each role within the senior students was. Some of the top senior debaters from around Adelaide competed to find out just who is the best debater with prizes from Unibooks for Everyone who participated and trophies for the winning school.

Gift Wrapping at Borders Book Store

Debating SA doesn't shut down in the off-season. Our operations group continues to work and, as many of you noticed at Christmas, so do our volunteers. Every year in the mad rush that leads up to December 25th, our generous sponsors Borders allow a team of volunteers to man their in-store gift wrapping booth. A troupe of volunteers wraps presents for the hoards of last-minute shoppers in exchange for the chance to raise money for DSA.

The Learning to Lead Pilot Programme

In August 2002 Debating SA was contacted by the Adelaide City Council and offered the opportunity to work with Rebecca Cox from the Council and Anita Zocchi from Adelaide High School to develop a two day training course on Leadership, Public Speaking, Teamwork, Conflict Resolution and Active Listening.
