| The introduction of the Australian Curriculum in schools presents an exciting opportunity for teachers to engage their students in debating.
Suitable for teachers of Years 5 to 10 this practical hands-on workshop will provide participants with the skills and resources necessary to implement debating as a classroom unit which addresses aspects of the Australian Curriculum: English. |

SESSION 1: INTRODUCTION TO DEBATING AND THE AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM.
What is a debate and how does the process of debating link to the requirements of the Australian Curriculum: English?
SESSION 2: PREPARING A DEBATE WITH THE DEBATING RESOURCE PACK.
Participants will prepare a debate during the day. They will work with resources we have developed that they can use with their own students in their classrooms immediately following the workshop.
SESSION 3: HOW TO ELICIT GREAT ARGUMENTS FROM STUDENTS:
Use of evidence and statistics. How are arguments supported and what kinds of evidence and statistics make for great arguments?
Fallacies and errors of reasoning. How to deal with strange and illogical arguments from students. How can students identify poor reasoning in their own and others’ arguments? This session explains.
Effective rebuttal techniques. Listening and responding tasks to develop students’ rebuttal skills.
SESSION 4: ASSESSING THE DEBATE
Now that your students have prepared their first debate, what is the correct way to assess their debate and decide the winner?
Cost: $200 per person.

About the Presenters
South Australian presenters Sonja Lowen and James Tran bring a wealth of knowledge of debating and working with students and schools in a friendly and user-friendly manner, so you know that you are in safe hands!

Sonja Lowen has been involved with debating for some 30 years since her university days. Subsequently she was an adjudicator and in 1991 became the competition administrator of the Schools Debating Union. Currently she is the Training and Development Officer of Debating SA. Sonja has a passion for working with schools and young people and on numerous occasions has coached both Primary and Secondary School debating teams, interstate debating teams, and has conducted workshops for teachers both in metropolitan and regional areas at both Primary and Secondary level. |

James Tran is the Administrative Officer of the Debating SA interschool competition. A Secondary School teacher by profession James is the major author of The Official Debating Manual, the guide to debating used by students in the interschool competition.
Originally a debater at Secondary School, James has coached numerous debating teams at Primary and Secondary School level, one team successfully to back-to-back Grand Final victories. James is the Gifted and Talented Coordinator at his school and is currently undertaking a Master of Education specialising in Gifted Education. |
